Climate Adaptation Rationale

Vulnerable communities around the world face a tremendous hurdle in securing funding for critical adaptation: many funding sources require a 'climate rationale' that requires clarity over why the proposed project is, indeed, a 'climate project'. CAW helps bridge this gap between projects and funders.

Why focus on adaptation rationalE?

The gap between adaptation needs and funding is massive, and growing as climate stresses becomes ever more challenging for communities.

Around the world, funds have been set up to address these challenges. However, projects have often been rejected because funders find that there is insufficient justification of how the proposed projects are addressing climate impacts. What is missing is a simple but robust approach that communities can use to make the case.

ADAPTATION PROJECTS STRUGGLE MAKING THE CASE TO FUNDERS THAT THEY ARE CLIMATE PROJECTS

CAW's adaptation rationale tool

CAW's Climate Adaptation Rationale (CAR) tool was developed as a template for quantifying project climate vulnerability and reduction in vulnerability by guiding the researcher to systematically reflect on and quantify the magnitude and likelihood of impacts from identified climate drivers on the population, assets (both economic and holistic), and outputs covered by the project scope and then to assess how well identified project elements reduce the magnitude of climate impacts. By carrying out the exercise of filling in and documenting the background reasoning and literature supporting the CAR responses, project proponents should be empowered to better understand and articulate the project as a specifically climate adaptive intervention with a clear connection to current and future climate conditions and plan to address these (e.g., a climate-based rationale for action).

CAW can help communities by supporting the preparation of climate rationales to ensure they meet particular funding requirements.

CAR IS A SIMPLE YET ROBUST APPROACH To ESTABLISHing YOUR RATIONALE

bringing project proponents and funders together

Once a Climate Adaptation Rationale has been developed, CAW can bring together the project proponent with funders. We have a comprehensive understanding of the different funders and their requirements.

We also can help funders to develop a more suitable Climate Adaptation Rationale requirements, and support the review of project proposals against their CARs.
